About your past

How do you check that a report is right before someone makes a decision on it?

What they are checking: Whether they check reports against known totals and source data before release, because one wrong number can destroy trust in analytics.

Tell me about a dashboard you built that people actually used. What made it stick?

What they are checking: Whether they build dashboards around how people actually work, since a technically correct dashboard nobody opens delivers no value.

This is in Business Intelligence Services within the Biological Sciences Division, serving the division, the medical center and the medical school. What do you want to know about the data sources you would work with and the stated salary range?

What they are checking: Whether they ask about the data sources and pay before accepting, which shows they make informed decisions rather than hopeful ones.

What would you do

How do you turn a vague reporting request into a specification you can build from?

What they are checking: Whether they can ask the right questions to turn a vague request into a clear spec, so the report built answers the real need.

An overnight job failed and the morning report is wrong. What do you do first?

What they are checking: Whether they warn report users quickly before fixing the cause, since people making decisions on bad numbers is the real damage.

About the work

Walk me through designing an extract, transform and load process for a reporting need that changes every quarter.

What they are checking: Whether they build pipelines that can absorb changing requirements without a rewrite, which saves the team rework every quarter.

How do you design a dimensional model for clinical or academic data where the grain is not obvious?

What they are checking: Whether they think carefully about grain and structure in messy clinical or academic data, since a wrong model produces quietly wrong numbers.

A stored procedure that used to run in two minutes now takes forty. How do you find out why?

What they are checking: Whether they diagnose slow queries methodically with execution plans and data changes, rather than guessing and making random edits.

Walk me through what a good source-to-target mapping document contains and who actually reads it.

What they are checking: Whether they write mapping documents that help real colleagues trace data, because good documentation keeps pipelines maintainable when people leave.

This is a biomedical enterprise with patient data in it. What does that change about access control and data security in what you build?

What they are checking: The compliance and access control this posting names in a health context.
