Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a feature or subsystem you owned from design through release. What decisions did you make?

What they are checking: Whether they have owned work end to end, as this level expects.

Tell me about a time you influenced a system-level design decision.

What they are checking: Whether they are starting to shape technical direction beyond their own code.

Tell me about a time you worked with hardware or controls engineers to solve a problem.

What they are checking: Whether they collaborate well across disciplines, as the posting stresses.

How do you keep up with changes in the autonomy field and decide what is worth using?

What they are checking: Whether they stay current while staying practical about production needs.

What would you do

Your feature works in simulation but behaves strangely on the test machine. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they debug methodically using logs and data rather than guessing.

How would you handle a requirement from another team that you think is unsafe?

What they are checking: Whether they raise safety concerns firmly and offer alternatives.

About the work

How do you write production-quality software for a machine that runs in a mine?

What they are checking: Whether they think about reliability, testing and harsh conditions, not just making it work.

What are the tradeoffs between C++ and Python for on-board autonomy code?

What they are checking: Whether they understand performance, safety and maintenance needs for embedded software.

How would you design software to handle a lost GPS signal in an open pit mine?

What they are checking: Whether they plan for failures and safe fallback behavior.

How do you approach code reviews, both giving and receiving them?

What they are checking: Whether they use reviews to improve quality and share knowledge.

What does semi-autonomous mean for a construction machine, and how does the operator fit in?

What they are checking: Whether they understand human-machine interaction in partial autonomy.
