What they are checking: Whether they have hands-on experience and can explain their own contribution.

Tell me about a time your model or code worked in the lab but failed in real conditions.

What they are checking: Whether they understand that dust, weather and terrain break assumptions.

Tell me about a time a mentor's feedback changed how you work.

What they are checking: Whether they learn from experienced engineers, a key part of an early-career role.

Why do you want to work on autonomy for heavy machines?

What they are checking: Whether their interest is real and specific to jobsites and Caterpillar.

What would you do

You are given a feature to own as a new engineer. How do you make sure you deliver it well?

What they are checking: Whether they can take ownership early, as the posting expects from day one.

About the work

How would a machine use computer vision to detect a person near it on a jobsite?

What they are checking: Whether they understand basic perception methods and the safety stakes involved.

What is sensor fusion, and how would you combine lidar, radar and camera data?

What they are checking: Whether they understand why each sensor has strengths and weaknesses.

How would you use simulation to test an autonomy feature before running it on a real machine?

What they are checking: Whether they know how simulation fits into development and where it falls short.

What machine learning model have you trained, and how did you know it was good enough?

What they are checking: Whether they evaluate models with the right metrics and real-world data.

How would you write code that must keep running safely if a sensor suddenly fails?
