Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
You analyze interactions between mechanical, servo, robotic and electrical components. Tell me about a fault whose cause was in a different system than the symptom.
What they are checking: Systems thinking, which separates an automation technician from a mechanic.
You would assist in implementing new equipment and sub-assembly systems. What do you want to know before a new cell arrives?
What they are checking: Whether they prepare thoughtfully for new equipment, asking about utilities, layout, programs and training, so commissioning goes smoothly.
This is in Lincolnshire asking for an associate degree in mechatronics, factory automation or robotics or equivalent experience. What equipment would you want to see before accepting?
What they are checking: Whether they ask what equipment they would actually maintain, which shows they understand the job and their own fit.
What would you do
A vision system is rejecting good parts. How do you work out whether it is the camera, the lighting, the program or the parts?
What they are checking: Whether they use a structured approach to isolate a vision system fault, rather than adjusting settings until it seems to work.
You work independently with little to no direction. How do you decide what to fix now and what to schedule?
What they are checking: Whether they can prioritize repairs by safety, production impact and urgency on their own, since there is little direct supervision.
The posting puts safety procedures first. What would make you refuse to work on a machine?
What they are checking: Whether they know when to stop and refuse unsafe work around robots, because automated equipment can seriously injure people.
About the work
This role troubleshoots automated systems, robotic malfunctions and reliability issues. Walk me through diagnosing a robot that has started missing its pick position.
What they are checking: Whether they can diagnose a robot step by step, checking mechanics, calibration and program, rather than relying on general maintenance habits.
The posting names programmable logic controllers, servo drives, vision systems and laser marking. Which do you know best, and how would you get up to speed on one you do not?
What they are checking: Whether they honestly know which named technologies they are strong in, and have a real plan for learning the rest.
You perform start-ups and shutdowns, modifications and upgrades on automation systems. What does a good start-up checklist include?
What they are checking: Discipline around a step where mistakes damage equipment or people.
How do you decide what preventive maintenance an automated cell actually needs?
What they are checking: Whether they think about failure modes or follow a generic schedule.
