Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Faculty and clinicians are busy people. How do you tell someone their request will take longer than they want?

What they are checking: Whether they can deliver unwelcome timelines honestly and politely to busy clinicians, keeping trust while setting realistic expectations about the work.

This is a senior technician role in the Biological Sciences Division, working across buildings and interacting with clinical and research users. What would you want to know about the room inventory before starting?

What they are checking: Whether they would ask how many rooms and what equipment they would cover, which shows they think about scope before starting.

What would you do

A presenter cannot get their laptop on screen five minutes before a lecture. Walk me through what you do.

What they are checking: Fast diagnosis under real time pressure, the defining moment of this job.

You log work in a ticketing system and take intake by phone, email and ticket. How do you keep the queue honest when people walk up to you instead?

What they are checking: Whether they log walk-up requests too, because an incomplete ticket record hides workload and lets problems slip through the cracks.

You would perform hardware and software upgrades. How do you schedule an upgrade in a room that is booked constantly?

What they are checking: Whether they can plan upgrades around a packed schedule and communicate early, so no class or meeting is disrupted by the work.

About the work

You would support auditoriums, conference rooms and classrooms across several biomedical buildings. How do you prepare a room so a lecture does not go wrong?

What they are checking: Whether they check rooms routinely before lectures rather than waiting for failures, since a dead projector in front of faculty is costly.

You would guide end users through troubleshooting over the phone. How do you talk someone through a fix when you cannot see what they see?

What they are checking: Whether they can guide a non-technical caller patiently with clear, simple steps, which solves problems faster than sending someone every time.

You would research products and systems available and recommend them to management. How do you evaluate a video conferencing system for a lecture hall?

What they are checking: Whether they evaluate systems against real room needs, support and cost rather than brand loyalty, so recommendations hold up over years.

The posting names computer and data security in the context of audio-visual work. Where does security actually come up in this role?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that networked room equipment can expose the network, since an insecure device is an open door into the University.

What is the most common cause of audio-visual failure in a lecture room, in your experience?

What they are checking: Whether they have real hands-on experience with recurring failures like cables, inputs and settings, rather than describing problems only in theory.
