Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you supported someone senior in serving a client or customer. How did you make their job easier?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that the role succeeds by making the Relationship Manager more effective and better prepared.

Describe a time you made a mistake on something a client would see. What did you do?

What they are checking: Whether they admit errors quickly, fix them, and tell the right people, which matters more than never erring.

How do you keep track of many small client tasks so nothing is missed?

What they are checking: Whether they have a reliable system, since missed follow-ups are the fastest way to lose an institutional client's trust.

Why do you want to work on the client side of asset management rather than in investing or operations?

What they are checking: Whether they genuinely enjoy service and coordination work, which is most of this job.

What would you do

An institutional client emails asking for a performance report, a fee question answered and a meeting set up, all by Friday. How do you work through it?

What they are checking: Whether they can organize several client requests, involve the right internal teams and confirm timelines back to the client.

A client request needs help from operations, legal and the portfolio team. How do you keep it from falling through the cracks?

What they are checking: Whether they own follow-through across teams instead of assuming someone else is tracking it.

A client is unhappy that their portfolio lagged its benchmark this quarter. You take the call and the Relationship Manager is out. What do you say?

What they are checking: Whether they stay calm, listen, avoid making promises about performance, and route it properly.

What would you do if a client asked you a question you didn't know the answer to and you weren't sure who in the firm would?

What they are checking: Whether they are honest about not knowing and resourceful about finding the answer quickly.

About the work

What kinds of institutional investors do you think Northern Trust Asset Management serves, and how might their needs differ?

What they are checking: Whether they understand pensions, endowments and foundations have different goals, rules and reporting needs.

How would you prepare materials for a client review meeting with a pension plan's investment committee?

What they are checking: Whether they know what goes into a review deck, such as performance, attribution and positioning, and check it carefully.
