Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Walk us through your current research program in otolaryngology and how you would move it to UW-Madison.

What they are checking: Whether their independent program and funding can transfer cleanly and keep going without a long gap.

Describe a collaboration with clinicians that changed the direction of your research.

What they are checking: Whether they can do research that matters to surgeons and patients rather than staying isolated from the clinic.

How do you mentor junior faculty, postdocs or residents doing research for the first time?

What they are checking: Whether they will help educate the next generation of clinicians and scientists, as the department expects.

Tell us about a result that did not hold up when you tried to replicate it. What did you do?

What they are checking: Scientific integrity and how they handle findings that do not hold.

What would you do

The department mentions voice, swallowing, hearing loss and health services research. Where does your work fit, and who here would you collaborate with first?

What they are checking: Whether they have looked at the department and see real collaboration, not just a general fit.

If a major grant is not renewed, how do you keep your lab and staff going?

What they are checking: Whether they have contingency plans and a sense of responsibility for the people their funding supports.

How would you make research more accessible to surgeons in the department who are interested but have little protected time?

What they are checking: Whether they would build research culture in a clinical department, not just run their own lab.

What would you want the department to provide in your first two years, and what would you deliver in return?

What they are checking: Whether they have realistic expectations for startup support and clear goals for themselves.

About the work

Tell us about your extramural funding. Which grants are active, and what is your plan for renewal?

What they are checking: Whether they have a sustainable funding record, which this senior tenure-track role requires.

What study design or methods do you use most, and what are their limits in your area?

What they are checking: Methodological depth and honest awareness of what their approach can and cannot show.
