Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This role raises major gifts for the College, on a team that raises more than $135 million a year. What's the largest gift you've personally closed?

What they are checking: Whether they have personally closed gifts at the size this team expects, since major gifts work is judged by actual commitments secured.

How do you ask for a specific number?

What they are checking: Whether they can name a specific amount confidently and stay quiet afterward, which is where many fundraisers hesitate and leave money behind.

How do you work with faculty and deans who are essential to a solicitation but busy?

What they are checking: Whether they can prepare and use faculty and deans efficiently, since their presence often closes a gift but their time is scarce.

What would you do

How do you decide a prospect isn't going to give, and what do you do then?

What they are checking: Whether they will let go of prospects who will not give, since time spent on comfortable relationships costs the College real gifts.

A donor wants to restrict a gift in a way the College can't accept. How do you handle that?

What they are checking: Whether they can say no to a donor's terms gracefully and offer alternatives, protecting the College while keeping the relationship intact.

The department is in a campaign seeking over a billion dollars annually. What does campaign pace change about how you work?

What they are checking: Whether they understand campaign goals raise pace and accountability, and can work faster without rushing donors into gifts they regret.

What would you want to know about the College's prospect pool and your portfolio before you took this?

What they are checking: Whether they would ask about the quality of the prospect pool before starting, which shows realistic expectations about what they can raise.

About the work

Walk me through how you'd move a prospect from a first meeting to a gift conversation.

What they are checking: Whether they have a deliberate plan for building a relationship toward an ask, because major gifts rarely happen by chance.

What does good stewardship look like after a gift closes?

What they are checking: Whether they see stewardship as the start of the next gift, because donors who feel thanked and informed tend to give again.

How many prospects should be in a portfolio, and how do you decide where your week goes?

What they are checking: Whether they manage a portfolio with clear numbers and priorities, since unfocused weeks quietly drain a fundraiser's results over a year.
