Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This role owns the content slate for a biweekly alumni newsletter. Walk me through how you would decide what goes in an issue when you have more good material than space.

What they are checking: Whether they have real editorial judgment, or just publish whatever arrives first.

You report into a communications team but depend on colleagues across the school for material. Tell me about a time you got content out of someone who had no reason to prioritize you.

What they are checking: Influence without authority, which is most of this job.

Tell me about a piece of writing you had to substantially rework after feedback. What did the feedback get right?

What they are checking: Ego about their own drafts, and whether they can name a real lesson.

This posting says plainly it is not eligible for employer-sponsored work authorization, and it sits inside Booth's Advancement office rather than a newsroom. What would you want to know about the team before accepting?

What they are checking: That they read the stated conditions, and that they are choosing fundraising communications on purpose.

What would you do

You would be writing gift announcements and stories about alumni and donors. How do you get a compelling story out of someone who does not want to be the center of attention?

What they are checking: Interviewing skill with reluctant subjects, and respect for a donor's comfort.

Campaign messaging has to stay consistent across every piece of collateral. How do you keep a message from drifting when several people are writing against it?

What they are checking: Whether they think about message discipline as an operational problem, not a creative one.

A gift announcement needs to go out, and the donor's family wants a change you think weakens the story. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Where they place the donor relationship against their own editorial preference.

About the work

The posting asks you to write one-page overviews, gift FAQs and major gift materials. How is writing for a prospective donor different from writing for a general alumni audience?

What they are checking: Whether they understand fundraising copy as persuasion with a specific ask behind it.

One duty is evaluating where AI tools can speed up producing development collateral while preserving accuracy and quality. Where would you use one, and where would you refuse to?

What they are checking: A considered position rather than either blanket enthusiasm or blanket refusal.

You are asked to write event recaps and talking points for Advancement events. What do you need to know about an event before you can write good talking points for it?

What they are checking: Whether they interrogate purpose and audience before writing.
