Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

You'd support escalated incidents including root cause identification. Tell me about an incident you traced to its cause.

What they are checking: Whether they have truly worked through an incident to its root cause, rather than only applying quick fixes that let it return.

What would you do

How do you tell whether a blocked connection is the firewall doing its job or a misconfiguration?

What they are checking: Whether they can tell intended blocking from a misconfiguration, since that judgment call comes up constantly in firewall operations.

Someone senior asks for a firewall rule opened urgently that you think is too broad. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they hold firm on sound security controls when someone senior pushes, while still finding a safe way to help them.

You'd take part in upgrades and migrations of network security infrastructure. How do you plan a firewall migration so users do not notice?

What they are checking: Whether they plan infrastructure migrations carefully enough to avoid disruption, since firewall changes can affect the entire company at once.

You'd work across network engineering, infrastructure, application, cloud and security teams. How do you resolve an issue when each team says it is not theirs?

What they are checking: Whether they can bring several teams together to solve a shared problem, which matters when every team believes the issue lies elsewhere.

About the work

This role runs day-to-day operations on firewalls and intrusion detection and prevention platforms across a global network. Walk me through your daily work today.

What they are checking: Whether their current daily work truly matches running firewalls and intrusion prevention, since this role is hands-on operations from the start.

The posting names Palo Alto Networks firewalls, their central management platform and a cloud security gateway. Which have you administered, and at what depth?

What they are checking: Whether they have honestly administered the named Palo Alto tools, so the team knows how much training they would need.

You'd create, modify and remove firewall policies, address translation rules and objects. How do you make a policy change safely on a production firewall?

What they are checking: Whether they have safe habits for production firewall changes, because one careless rule can cut off connectivity across a global network.

Walk me through troubleshooting a connectivity problem using firewall logs, traffic analysis and packet captures.

What they are checking: Whether they can methodically use logs, traffic data and packet captures to find a fault, which is daily work in this role.

You'd monitor infrastructure and proactively identify configuration, performance and security issues. What would you look for before anyone reports a problem?

What they are checking: Whether they look for problems before users notice them, because proactive monitoring prevents outages and security gaps on critical infrastructure.
