Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about the most surprising result you found with scanning probe microscopy.

What they are checking: Whether they follow unexpected findings with care and can explain why they matter.

Describe a collaboration where your measurements helped answer someone else's research question.

What they are checking: Whether they work well in a collaborative facility where staff science and user science overlap.

What would you do

Your UHV chamber develops a leak during a critical experiment. How do you respond?

What they are checking: Whether they can troubleshoot vacuum systems calmly and protect the instrument.

What fundamental question in quantum or energy materials would you explore with scanning probe methods here?

What they are checking: Whether their research ideas fit the Quantum and Energy Materials group.

How would you train a new user to run STM safely without damaging the instrument?

What they are checking: Whether they can support the user community while protecting expensive, delicate equipment.

About the work

Walk me through how you prepare an atomically clean surface in UHV before STM measurements.

What they are checking: Whether they have the practical surface science skills that make every other measurement possible.

How do you condition or prepare an STM tip, and how do you know when a tip artifact is fooling you?

What they are checking: Whether they can tell real features from tip effects, a core skill in scanning probe work.

What can scanning tunneling spectroscopy tell you about a material's electronic states, and what are its pitfalls?

What they are checking: Whether they understand STS deeply, including setpoint effects and how to interpret spectra.

When would you choose AFM over STM for a surface science question?

What they are checking: Whether they know the strengths of each technique, such as non-conducting samples or chemical bond imaging.

What other UHV techniques, such as photoemission or electron diffraction, have you used alongside scanning probe work?

What they are checking: Whether they bring the broader UHV synthesis and characterization skills the posting values.
