Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a patient whose events turned out not to be epileptic. How did you figure it out and how did you tell them?

What they are checking: Clinical judgment with functional seizures, plus whether they can deliver a hard diagnosis without the patient feeling dismissed.

How do you teach a resident to read an EEG so they actually get better at it rather than just watching you read?

What they are checking: Whether they have a real teaching method, since training residents and fellows is part of the job on this track.

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a neurosurgeon or another team member at an epilepsy surgery conference. What happened?

What they are checking: How they handle disagreement in a multidisciplinary group where good decisions depend on people speaking up respectfully.

What scholarly project or quality improvement work would you want to start in your first two years?

What they are checking: Whether they have a concrete, realistic plan for scholarship that a division chief can support and measure.

What would you do

Where do you see yourself on the clinician-educator to clinician-scholar spectrum, and what would you want your protected time to go toward?

What they are checking: Whether their goals fit a clinical health sciences track, where clinical work and teaching come first and scholarship builds around them.

A woman with epilepsy on valproate tells you she is planning a pregnancy. How do you handle the next few visits?

What they are checking: Practical, safe medication management in a high-stakes population and how they share decisions with the patient.

This is a dual appointment with the university and UW Medical Foundation. What questions do you have about how clinical productivity and academic work fit together?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the dual-employer setup and have thought realistically about RVU expectations versus academic duties.

Many of our patients drive in from rural Wisconsin. How would you manage follow-up and driving restrictions for someone two hours away?

What they are checking: Whether they think about access, telehealth and state driving rules in a way that fits the population the program serves.

About the work

Walk me through how you work up a patient with drug-resistant epilepsy who might be a surgical candidate.

What they are checking: Whether they know the presurgical pathway well enough to run cases inside a comprehensive epilepsy program rather than just refer them out.

How comfortable are you reading continuous video EEG and running the epilepsy monitoring unit on your own?

What they are checking: Whether they can carry EMU and EEG reading duties from day one, which is a core workload in an academic epilepsy division.

When would you move a patient toward responsive neurostimulation, VNS or laser ablation instead of trying another medication?

What they are checking: Current knowledge of device and surgical options and the reasoning behind timing, not just a list of treatments.
