Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Walk me through the most complex Workday configuration you've owned end to end, from the business problem to go-live.

What they are checking: Whether they have truly owned hard configuration work or only supported someone else who made the key decisions.

Describe a time another IT team called you in to solve something outside your normal area. What did you do?

What they are checking: Whether they really act as a cross-functional resource people seek out, as the posting expects of a subject matter expert.

Tell me about a junior analyst you coached. What did they struggle with, and what changed because of your help?

What they are checking: Whether mentoring is something they actually do with patience and results, not a line they add to sound senior.

What would you do

A plant HR lead says Workday is calculating overtime wrong for a rotating 2-2-3 schedule. How do you work out whether it's configuration, data, or the request itself?

What they are checking: Whether they diagnose systematically across setup, data and requirements instead of jumping to reconfigure the first thing they suspect.

Two business leaders want conflicting Workday changes before the same deadline. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can surface the conflict to the right decision maker without picking a side quietly or stalling both requests.

A requested change looks cheap to build but will cost a lot to maintain. How do you explain that to a business user who just wants it done?

What they are checking: Whether they can talk cost-effectiveness in plain terms a non-technical user accepts, which the posting puts at the heart of the role.

About the work

How do you decide between configuring Workday to fit a process and asking the business to change the process to fit Workday?

What they are checking: Whether they weigh long-term upgrade and maintenance cost against user preference, which is the core judgment of an architect.

Tell me how you plan unit, integration and acceptance testing for a change that touches Workday and a downstream payroll or finance system.

What they are checking: Whether they think about what breaks outside Workday, since integration failures hurt more than in-tenant mistakes.

Workday releases two major updates a year. How do you handle a release that changes a business process your users depend on?

What they are checking: Whether they treat release management as planned work with regression testing rather than something that just happens to them.

How would you write a specification that a less experienced analyst could build and test from without coming back to you every hour?

What they are checking: Whether their specs are clear enough to scale their knowledge through others instead of making them a bottleneck.

How do you keep Workday security and role-based access tight while still giving managers in plants and the office what they need?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that convenience-driven access grants create audit and privacy risk that an architect must guard against.
