Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you troubleshot a refrigeration or boiler problem with an outside contractor. How did you work together?

What they are checking: Whether they can share what they know, learn from the contractor and stay involved instead of just standing by.

Tell me about a time you noticed a safety issue no one else had reported. What did you do?

What they are checking: Ownership of safety on a shift where fewer people are around to catch problems.

What would you do

You smell ammonia in the engine room on third shift and you're the only tech on site. What do you do first?

What they are checking: Whether they put personal safety and the emergency response plan ahead of trying to fix the leak alone.

You have three work orders open and production calls about a cooler running warm. How do you decide what to do?

What they are checking: Judgment on priorities when product is at risk, and whether they communicate with the shift supervisor.

About the work

Walk me through the main parts of an ammonia refrigeration system and what each one does.

What they are checking: Core understanding of compressors, condensers, evaporators and receivers, which everything else in the job builds on.

What do your daily engine room rounds look like, and what readings tell you something is starting to go wrong?

What they are checking: Whether they know normal pressures, temperatures and oil levels well enough to catch problems early.

Explain how you'd lock out a compressor or isolate a section of ammonia piping before work begins.

What they are checking: Real knowledge of LOTO and safe isolation on a hazardous system, where shortcuts can kill people.

Why do refrigeration logs and work order records matter so much, and what happens when they're sloppy?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that records support PSM compliance, audits and troubleshooting, not just paperwork.

What do you check on condenser water and boiler water chemistry, and why?

What they are checking: Working knowledge of water treatment, since poor chemistry causes scale, corrosion and lost efficiency.

What Good Manufacturing Practices matter when you're working in or near food production areas?

What they are checking: Whether they protect the product while doing maintenance, such as tool control, hygiene and contamination risks.

What ammonia or refrigeration training or certifications do you have, and what are you working toward?

What they are checking: Their current level and whether they are committed to growing in a field where training directly affects safety.
