Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time a weld of yours failed inspection. What happened next?

What they are checking: Whether they take ownership of quality problems and fix them without excuses.

What safety habits do you keep every shift in a welding bay?

What they are checking: Whether they consistently use PPE, ventilation and fire watch rather than cutting corners.

Are you able to work a steady first shift, and how have you handled attendance at past jobs?

What they are checking: Whether they will be reliable, since a fabrication line depends on every welder showing up.

What would you do

You're behind on a run of parts and the next weld would be easier if you skipped a cleaning step. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they protect quality under time pressure, which the shop says it values.

Would you be willing to take a weld test here, and what would you want to know before starting?

What they are checking: Whether they are confident in their skill and ask sensible questions about the joint and process.

About the work

What processes have you run on aluminum, MIG, TIG or both, and what thicknesses are you comfortable with?

What they are checking: Whether their aluminum experience is real and matches the work in a heavy fabrication shop.

What do you do differently to prep aluminum compared to steel before you weld it?

What they are checking: Whether they know to remove the oxide layer and keep the metal clean to avoid porosity.

You start seeing porosity in your aluminum welds. What are the first things you check?

What they are checking: Whether they can troubleshoot gas coverage, contamination and wire condition on their own.

How do you read a weld symbol on a print, and what do you do if something on the print isn't clear?

What they are checking: Whether they can work from blueprints and ask rather than guess.

How do you keep a part from warping when you're laying a lot of weld on aluminum?

What they are checking: Whether they understand heat control, sequencing and fixturing on a metal that moves easily.
