About your past

Why investment banking, and why now in your career?

What they are checking: Whether they have a clear, believable reason for the switch that will hold up through long hours and hard deals.

Tell me about a deal or transaction you've followed recently. What was the logic behind it?

What they are checking: Whether they follow markets with real curiosity and can explain strategic rationale, not just repeat headlines.

Tell me about a time you led a team through a tight deadline. What did you do when something went wrong late?

What they are checking: Whether they stay calm, reprioritize and communicate when a deliverable is at risk.

Why Wells Fargo Corporate and Investment Banking rather than another bank?

What they are checking: Whether they have done homework on the bank's client base and platform rather than giving a generic answer.

What would you do

As an associate you'll manage analysts and answer to VPs. How would you review an analyst's model before it goes up the chain?

What they are checking: Whether they can own quality control and catch errors before a senior banker or client sees them.

A managing director asks for a pitch book change at 11 p.m. that will take all night. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can handle demanding requests professionally and still raise concerns about quality or tradeoffs.

About the work

Walk me through the three financial statements and how they connect.

What they are checking: Whether they have the accounting foundation the six weeks of training will build on, explained cleanly under pressure.

How would you value a mid-sized industrial company that a client wants to sell?

What they are checking: Whether they can choose and explain comparable companies, precedent transactions and a DCF, and know when each fits.

If depreciation goes up by ten dollars, how does that move through the three statements?

What they are checking: Whether they can reason through linked accounting effects, including taxes and cash, without memorized shortcuts.

How would you think about a company's ability to take on more debt?

What they are checking: Whether they understand credit basics like leverage, coverage and cash flow, which the training program highlights.
