About your past

This internship feeds a human resources leadership development program. What draws you to human resources rather than another business function?

What they are checking: Genuine motivation from a master's student who had other options.

What is the hardest part of human resources work that people outside the function underestimate?

What they are checking: Realism about a function often seen as administrative.

Human resources handles information about real people's pay, performance and problems. How do you think about that responsibility?

What they are checking: Seriousness about confidentiality before they have held it.

Tell me about influencing a decision when you had no authority.

What they are checking: The core skill of a human resources career, testable from student experience.

What would you want to learn from being placed in a specific human resources function rather than rotating?

What they are checking: Whether they have thought about depth versus breadth.

What is one thing you would want to change about how companies typically manage people?

What they are checking: A point of view, which a leadership development program is selecting for.

This is for master's students, assigned to Lake County north of Chicago with sponsored relocation and travel, and high performers are considered for the leadership development program afterwards. How are you thinking about that path?

What they are checking: That they read the pipeline intent and are choosing it deliberately.

What would you do

How would you approach an assignment where the business wants an answer that the people data does not support?

What they are checking: Independence in a function that sits close to leadership.

You would work on a meaningful project in eleven weeks. How would you scope one so it finishes and gets used?

What they are checking: Realistic scoping, the difference between an intern project and a deliverable.

How do you build credibility with a business leader who has been managing people for twenty years?

What they are checking: Earning standing early in a career.
