Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Which track interests you more, data engineering or software engineering, and why?

What they are checking: The posting splits into two tracks, so this establishes fit before anything else.

Tell me about a bug that took you a long time to find.

What they are checking: Debugging persistence, which matters more in an intern than what they already know.

Tell me about a group project where you disagreed on the approach.

What they are checking: How they handle technical disagreement with peers.

How do you go about learning a technology you have never used?

What they are checking: The single most useful trait in an intern.

What do you want to have built by the end of the summer?

What they are checking: Whether they have a goal or are collecting an internship.

What would you do

This is a pharmaceutical company. What do you think is different about building software here?

What they are checking: Whether they have thought about the domain rather than treating it as any tech internship.

About the work

Tell me about something you built. What part was hardest?

What they are checking: Whether they have built anything beyond coursework, and whether they can talk about it honestly.

Walk me through what happens when someone loads a page in an application you have written.

What they are checking: Whether they understand the whole path rather than the layer they worked in.

What experience do you have with Java, and with Spring Boot specifically?

What they are checking: The posting names both, and Spring Boot is not something most undergraduates have touched.

How would you design a pipeline that moves data from one system into a database every night?

What they are checking: Whether they can reason about a data pipeline at a basic level, which is the data track's core.
